7. Sidebar

The Sidebar is the centre of operations for OneCommander.

You can collapse and expand it with shortcut

Alt+S (S as sidebar)

The sidebar is divided into several sections:

1. Drives

This lists the currently-attached and mapped drives. It can be hidden by double-clicking Drives title (like any other group in sidebar). The  button gives the following options:

  • - Refresh everything - OneCommander has a system to monitor for folder changes, but in some rare cases the folder don't refresh. This is the same as pressing F5 (which is the same as refresh in web browsers)
  • - Map network drive
  • - Browse phone - Since OC doesn't support MTP protocol, this opens Explorer to show attached phone content. See a workaround to browse phone storage directly in OC

2. Favorites

OneCommander allows you to add as many favorite folders as you like. They are arranged into groups in the Sidebar. OneCommander creates an initial group from a list of standard folders in your C:\Users\<username> folder, and you can add as many groups as you like by clicking the "New Group" button. Here's an example of a Favorites Group:

Favorite folders have two basic uses:

  • They act as bookmarks for folders you use often:
    • click on a favorite folder and it opens in the currently-active browser (in dual pane layouts), in the currently-selected tab
    • MMB opens the path in a new tab in the currently-active browser

In dual-pane layouts you will see two buttons [1][2] on hover, to choose in which browser to open the folder

  • You can quickly move or copy files or folders from a browser to a favorite folder by dragging (to move), or holding the Ctrl key down and dragging (to copy), the file or folder from the browser and dropping it onto one of the items in the Favorites Group.
  • Note that dragging a file or folder to a favorites group does not create a new favorite; it just moves or copies that folder or file to the chosen favorite.

Basic operations for favorites groups:

  • Add folder to group: Click the "+" button to the right of the group's name, or drop the folder into the group's title.
  • Rearrange folders within group, move folders between groups: Drag folders up and down within group or between groups.
  • Rearrange Groups: Click on the button to: select "Move up" or "Move down"
  • Create aliases (alternative names) for folders in groups: Right-click on folder name and select "Change Alias". This doesn't rename the folder but just creates an alias for it
  • Remove folders from groups: Right-click on folder name and select "Remove from group".

3. History

History is a quick way to find what you browsed recently.

It holds the most recently opened folders regardless of window or tab in which they were opened.

If opened folder is already in the list, it is moved to the top.

You can remove it, using an option from its header menu.

Change number of remembered folders and other related options in Settings>Window>Sidebar

You can't move the history pane up, or mix with favorites, because it is a different panel just made to look like favorites group. In the future there might be additional sidebar customization options.
